Commercial Construction/ Description

The Commercial Construction Technology program at State Technical College of Missouri offers a comprehensive and industry-driven curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in commercial building construction. The program blends technical instruction with hands-on experience in structural systems, building codes, construction materials, mechanical and electrical systems, and project management.

Students begin with foundational skills in construction safety, blueprint reading, and surveying, then progress into specialized areas such as roofing systems, concrete construction, steel framing, and finish work. Emphasis is placed on interpreting construction documents, applying estimating and scheduling techniques, and understanding the integration of building systems within the commercial environment. Courses are taught in modern labs and field settings using tools, equipment, and software commonly found in the industry. Small class sizes ensure personalized instruction and skill development. Students gain practical experience through a required summer internship with licensed contractors or construction firms, reinforcing professionalism, safety, and teamwork.

Graduates of the program are prepared for employment as construction technicians, estimators, site supervisors, project coordinators, and field engineers. They are equipped to assist in planning, managing, and executing commercial construction projects with a strong understanding of materials, methods, codes, and sustainable practices.

Enrollment in the Commercial Construction Technology program is limited, and students are selected on a competitive basis. It is a graduation requirement of the Commercial Construction Technology program for students to earn a grade of “C” or better in all core curriculum and program requirements courses.
