Commercial Turf & Grounds Management/ Description

The Commercial Turf and Grounds Management (CTG) program prepares students to enter careers as specialists and supervisors in turf and landscape management. The landscaping and turfgrass industry is in high demand with abundant career opportunities nationwide.  The program provides hands-on training on State Tech’s 9-Hole Osage View golf course from instructors who have experience in both the landscape and turfgrass industry.  The program is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE).

The CTG program provides training for students to evaluate and implement best practices in maintaining golf courses, athletic turf, parks, and recreational facilities as well as grounds of residential and commercial properties.   The curriculum emphasizes the operation, diagnostics, and maintenance of industry-standard equipment used in landscaping and turf management settings. Throughout the program, students are expected to demonstrate technical proficiency, apply critical thinking, collaborate effectively in team settings, and exhibit professional communication.  A required internship is included in the summer semester between the first and second years.

The Commercial Turf & Grounds Management program delivers courses in eight-week blocks.  Students finish their first and second years in early March. Interns and graduates are available to industry in early March during peak industry hiring periods.  Students must maintain a “C” average in all “Core Curriculum” and “Program Requirements.” Students earn a Missouri Category 3 Pesticide Applicator’s License.
