The Commercial Construction Technology program at State Tech prepares students to build the structures that shape communities, from schools and hospitals to commercial complexes and public facilities. Students begin with a strong foundation in construction safety, blueprint reading, and surveying, then advance into roofing systems, commercial concrete, structural design, building codes, construction materials, mechanical and electrical systems, and project management. If you are interested in residential construction we have you covered, if you can build a commercial building you can build a home. Large scale residential building is often done by commercial builders.
Throughout the program, students learn to interpret construction documents, estimate and schedule projects, and integrate modern building techniques into the construction environment. At State Tech, “hands-on” isn’t a slogan; it’s the foundation of the program. Students participate in every stage of constructing a new commercial building, from the initial site survey all the way through finish work, giving graduates real experience and real projects they can proudly show family and friends.
With strong industry partnerships and state-of-the-art labs, students train on the tools, technology, and standards used on professional job sites. Every student also completes an internship, gaining valuable on-the-job experience while forming connections that often lead directly to employment.
The construction industry needs skilled professionals, workers whose expertise can’t be automated or replaced. Graduates enter high-demand positions in pre-construction services such as estimating, procurement, and scheduling, as well as field roles across multiple trades, often advancing into positions like field engineer or superintendent.
At State Tech, you won’t just study construction: you’ll build the future from the ground up.
Commercial construction continues to expand across Missouri and the Midwest, creating strong demand for skilled technicians, estimators, and project support professionals. State Tech’s industry partnerships and required internship give students a competitive edge in securing high-quality employment.
Hands-on education is emphasized through modern labs, fieldwork, and tools commonly used in today’s commercial construction industry. Students refine skills in interpreting construction documents, estimating and scheduling projects, and understanding how building systems integrate within commercial structures. A required summer internship with licensed contractors or construction firms reinforces real-world experience, professionalism, and teamwork. The Commercial Construction Technology program blends classroom instruction with extensive hands-on education in labs, field environments, and active construction settings. Small class sizes ensure individualized guidance and strong skill development.
Graduates will be well-prepared for taking positions related to pre-construction services like estimating, procurement, and scheduling, or field positions related to any number of trades, leading to roles as field engineers or superintendents.
Students start with foundational skills in construction safety, blueprint reading, and surveying, then progress into advanced topics such as roofing systems, commercial concrete, structural systems, building codes, construction materials, mechanical and electrical systems, and project management. Emphasis is placed upon interpreting construction documents, applying estimating and scheduling techniques, and the integration of building techniques within the construction environment.
Students dive into practical courses that reflect real commercial construction work. Roofing Methods, Commercial Concrete, and Structural Steel Design and Connections provide hands-on experience with core building systems, while Construction Estimating and Project Scheduling build essential project management skills. Additional classes in Mechanical and Electrical Systems, Building Envelope, and Finish Flooring round out a strong, industry-focused skill set.
With training in materials, methods, scheduling, management, and safety, graduates support the planning and execution of commercial construction projects from start to finish.
We believe time-on-task has to be part of your education. That means time spent learning from experienced instructors in real-world environments and real-world situations. That’s why the State Tech campus is home to more than 50 labs, an automotive bay, aviation hangar, and 40+ acres of land dedicated to our heavy equipment operations program.
